Album Review: The Awkwards - Millenium Castle

If you were to take Vampire Weekend, add noise, punk, influences of disco you would end up with something that sounds about like The Awkwards. Hailing from Vevey, Switzerland (making it a local band for me) The Awkwards bring an usual mix of genres, for example, to begin their album the band debuts with the song "Rat Kidz". After a brief, synth and bass intro on the song, it immediately attacks you with a noisy, attitude-full, guitar riffs as well as  the continuing of the synths found in the introduction gives the song a disco sound that leans pretty close to punk. The vocals tend to sound off hand and Swedish, although their maternal language is french; reminding me of bands such a Brainbombs. Later in the album, some of the guitars reminded me of sounds that would be associated to The Minutemen's Double Nickles on the Dime as well as the poppy drums of bands such as Vampire Weekend. Finally, the last couple of songs, primarily in their penultimate song named fighting for love, the band adds many layers with fuzzy psychedelic riffs, very effect-full lengthy melodies which really would be put under the shoegazing genre which sound surprising and is easily my favorite part of the album. Millenium Castle is decent album, the songs are filled with energy, and is worth it's length. I would thoroughly recommend a listen. 7/10
